Postdoc advertisement, EU-funded research HUMANE-AI NET

Postdoc advertisement. The Laboratory of Agent Based Social Simulation (LABSS) at the Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies CNR is seeking a strong and highly motivated candidate for a postdoctoral position (fixed-term appointment of up to a maximum of 2 year) with a background in computational social science and related disciplines.

The successful candidate will be part of an international and interdisciplinary team of researchers investigating social norms’ dynamics (e.g., emergence, spread, change) and their role in shaping behaviour in real-world and online environments (e.g., human-AI hybrid systems).

This research line will be addressed using computer simulations, big data, online and laboratory experiments. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with experimental and cognitive social scientists, and will be primarily responsible for developing computational models of social norms in one or more of the following projects:

  • analyzing the role of norms in the spread of misinformation about the Covid-19 pandemic in online communities
  • simulating social norms’ emergence and change in collective risks settings
  • modelling social norms in criminal organizations

Therefore a flexible approach will be required in this role.

The project is part of the EU-funded research HUMANE-AI NET, a network that brings together top European research centers, universities and key industrial champions with the aim of developing robust, trustworthy AI capable of “understanding” humans, adapting to complex real-world environments, and appropriately interacting in complex social settings.

Job description

The successful candidate must have a PhD (or receive it soon) in Computational Social Sciences or related disciplines with a strong focus on modelling social dynamics. She/he will be creative, independent, with a willingness to thrive in a highly interdisciplinary environment, enjoying discussions in a creative and stimulating atmosphere. Programming skills (e.g., Python, C++), knowledge of agent-based simulation platforms (e.g., NetLogo), social network and Big Data analysis, statistical analysis tools (e.g., R) are key requirements. Experience with the design of laboratory or on-line experiments is a plus. She/he will be recruited by the Laboratory of Agent Based Social Simulation, a highly interdisciplinary research group working at the intersection among cognitive, social and computational sciences. It is situated within the Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies at the Italian National Research Council, and conveniently located near the central train station in Rome, Italy.

The working language is English.

Employment Terms and Conditions

The selected candidate will be appointed as a research fellow (known as “assegnista di ricerca”) for a period of one year (12 months). The fellowship (known as “assegno di ricerca”) is tax free under Italian legislation, and only social charges apply (about 11%). The gross amount of the fellowship is € 19,367.00 per year. The salary may increase during the second year. The position will also include additional funding for conducting research and traveling to conferences.

There are no teaching obligations.

PhD is not a requirement. We will also consider candidates who are nearing the end of their PhD.
