Post-doc fellowship: Theory and experiments on social norms and their dynamics (Deadline July 2nd 2020)

The Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies at the Italian Research Council (CNR) is inviting applications for one full-time post-doc research fellowship within the Laboratory of Agent Based Social Simulation (LABSS) to investigate experimentally the effects of group identity on the enforcement and dynamics of social norms.

Strong and highly motivated candidates with a background in experimental social psychology/sociology/philosophy/economics are invited to apply. The appointment will be for one year (12 months). After satisfactory evaluation, it may be extended for an additional period. The successful applicant is expected to start on October 1st 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The post-doc fellow will work on the subject of social norms and their dynamics, how social norms affect behavior, how to measure them and what strategies to adopt to foster social change, using available theoretical and experimental tools from philosophy, social psychology, economics and sociology. More specifically, she or he will investigate the effects of group identity on the enforcement and dynamics of social norms.

The successful candidate will be creative, independent, and with an inclination for interdisciplinary research. She/he will have experience with the design of experiments and the analysis of empirical data.

The post-doc fellowship will be expected to produce high-quality research on the project, individually and in close collaboration with the principal investigator and to publish the results of the research in international peer-reviewed journals and conferences. Fellow will work in close collaboration with Dr. Giulia Andrighetto (https://www.istc.cnr.it/en/people/giulia-andrighetto), PI of ISTC-CNR unit of the “One for all, all for one. Reputational mechanisms for aggression, revenge, and forgiveness in intergroup relationships (14ALL)” project. English is the operating language.

Employment Terms and Conditions

The selected candidate will be appointed as a post-doc fellow (known as “assegnista di ricerca”) for a period of one year (12 months). The fellowship (known as “assegno di ricerca”) is tax free under Italian legislation, and only social charges apply (about 11%). The gross amount of the fellowship is € 19,367.00 per year. The salary may increase during the second year. The position will also include additional funding for conducting research and traveling to conferences. There are no teaching obligations. PhD is not a requirement. We will also consider candidates who are nearing the end of their PhD.

Institutional Embedding

The Laboratory of Agent Based Social Simulation (LABSS) hosts a highly interdisciplinary research group working at the intersection among cognitive, social and computational sciences. It is situated within the Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies at the CNR and located in the center of Rome, Italy.
