R3PACK

R3PACK - Reduce, Reuse, Rethink PACKaging: towards novel fiber-based packaging and reuse schemes uptake (European Horizon 2022 - 2025)

The European Horizon project R3PACK – Reduce, Reuse and Rethink - aims to address the challenge of transforming sustainable packaging in accordance with the objectives of the Green Deal, which include achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and ensuring that all packaging in the EU market is economically viable, 100% reusable, or recyclable by 2030. The R3PACK consortium gathers 24 organizations from 7 different countries, bringing together key actors from the food value chain, from the packaging manufacturer to the retailer, combined with experts in the food sector from companies providing innovative solutions to universities.

As members of the Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies of the Italian National Council of Research, our objective is to explore consumers' attitudes and beliefs regarding reusable packaging schemes in France and Belgium. Firstly, we measure attitudes and social norms using nationally representative surveys. This phase allows us to diagnose situational and social context and understand the main mechanisms behind the adoption of reusable packaging food solutions.

In the second phase, we integrate the findings of the first phase using an experiment to study the drivers of the individuals’ adoption intention of reusable packaging schemes. More specifically, our experiment is based on a social tipping intervention, intended as an intervention aimed at creating social tipping, intended as a phenomenon that a small subgroup of a population, adopting a new behavior, can trigger a self-reinforcing diffusion process that finally establishes this behavior as a social norm, provided that a critical value called “tipping point” is crossed.
